Nshongi gorilla group (11 members) was named after a river in Rushaga sector where the group was first spotted.
The word Nshongi comes from the Rukiga term Omushongi Gwoboki meaning "honey," referring to the river's honey-like color. This group, known for its fission history, is led by Silverback Bweza.
Bweza Gorilla Family (15 members): The Bweza family split from the Nshongi family in 2012 due to increased rivalry. This family often forages on community land near the park boundary.
The split was led by Silverback Kakono,, who broke away from the Nshongi family to form his own. The park rangers hoped the family would reunite, but that did not happen.
The name "Busingye" means "peace" in the local language. However, the silverback Busingye is known for fighting with other gorilla groups.
In addition, this group was formed in August 2012 when the silverback Busingye challenged another silverback in the Kahungye Gorilla Family and decided to start his own family.
The Busingye Gorilla Family consists of 9 members, including 1 silverback, 5 blackbacks, and 3 infants.
Mishaya Gorilla Group (8 members): The group is known for being close to humans and is led by a silverback named Tinfayo. Initially led by the late Silverback Mishaya, it is now under Tinfayo’s leadership.
The Mishaya Gorilla Group was formed in 2011 when Silverback Mishaya split from the Nshongi gorilla family.
Mishaya was known for being aggressive and fighting other gorilla families to gain access to females.
A newly established group from the Bweza family, led by Silverback Rwigi. (8 members)
Rwigi had a disagreement with another silverback in the Kahugye family, and left the group. Rwigi took some adult females and juveniles with him to form the Rwigi Gorilla Family.
Bikingi Gorilla Family (10 members): The Bikingi Gorilla Family is a group of mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda.
The group is named after the former dominant silverback, Bikingi, who was killed by a solitary male in 2018. Comprising members from a previously disbanded group, now led by an unnamed Silverback.
Kahungye Gorilla Family (13 members): Led by Silverback Ruziika, this group is a favorite among visitors. Kahungye mountain gorilla family now consists of 17 members
It should be noted that the number of gorilla family members keeps changing due to splits, new members joining, deaths, or new births.
Mucunguzi Gorilla Family (12 members): A splinter group led by Silverback Mucunguzi, who earned his name meaning "redeemer."
The name comes from the local word for "savior" Mucunguzi was a member of the Bweza family, but left after a fight.
He then lived alone for a time before joining the Bikingi family and taking some females to start his own group.
Gorilla Habituation Experience
Furthermore, Rushaga is the only sector in Bwindi offering a unique Gorilla Habituation Experience, allowing visitors up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla group.
Currently, the Bikingi and Bushaho families participate in this experience, with only four permits available per day at $1,500 per person.
